The War Between Iraq And Iran - 1672 Words

The war between Iraq and Iran initiated by Iraq dictator Saddam Hussein in September 1980 provided no gains or benefits to either country, at the end of the war in July of 1988 after 8 long years. At the conclusion of many wars throughout history, at least one party resulted in gaining territory, wealth, power, and other profits. However, in reality it is understood that no one ever wins in war due to the adverse affects among innocent humanity; exemplified by the Iraq-Iran war. The initial conflict begins in 1979 when Iran went through the Islamic Revolution overthrowing Mohammad Reza Shah, the current head of the Iran. This period of Iranian turmoil lead to a many changes in government, creating a politically weak country. Trying to gain from Iran’s turmoil Saddam Hussein made plans to control the region. Saddam Hussein, the president of Iraq, wanted â€Å"exclusive Iraqi sovereignty over the Shatt-el-Arab River†¦ forming Iraq’s best outlet to the sea† (Hi story). This would give Iraq political and economic dominance of the gulf while making Hussein the leader of the Arab world. Saddam also felt that the new Iran revolutionary leadership â€Å"would threaten Iraq’s delicate Sunni Shia balance† (Federal Research Division). Reflection Paper According to Gordon Allport, an American psychologist, â€Å"Personality is the dynamic organization within the individual of those psychophysical systems that determine his characteristic behavior and thought (Allport, 1961, p. 28). Each person has unique characteristic traits that influenced by both biological factors (nature) and experience (nurture). For many years, psychologists have been trying to study the human behavior using different theories of personality. While many theories are rational, the theory of the ‘Unconscious mind’ emphasized by Sigmund Freud most resonated with me in explaining one’s behaviors. Freud stressed the idea of our subconscious and its impact on our personality, using his analogy of the iceberg. In the present report, the new workplace practices in Top Truck Company have been evaluated. Moreover, the company also identifies the issues in sustaining these changes if the yard manager is moved to another location. The report also sheds light whether the blue collar unions more easily accept changes than their counterparts or the white collar workers. Evaluation of New Workplace Practices In the present case, the new yard manager introduced a number of reforms to uplift the organization culture of the truck company. It is necessary that all the strategies work together and complement each other in order to increase the overall effectiveness of the human resource strategies. The human resource management is directed towards the manpower planning. In order to increase the productivity of the organization, the management implements the recruitment strategies, trains them and resolves conflicts. In this regard, in the present situation, the yard manager of the organization had implemented a number of strategies so that the truck drivers remain engaged with the organization (Kaya, Ergn and Kesen, 2014). The yard manager changed the previous methods of autocratic leadership style in the workplace. In order to provide the truck drivers a sense of freedom, he introduced uniforms and bought a new fleet of trucks. It provided the sense of autonomy to the truck drivers which increased their overall performance. Moreover, he established constructive relationships with the truck drivers by communicating them and listening to their problems. It helped in creating relationships with the truck drivers which motivated them to work towards the best of the organization. Moreover, the yard manager also installed a new computer system in the organization which made several functions automated and increased the overall efficiency of the organization. Therefore, these strategies complemented each other and worked together to increase the overall performance of the organization (Kehoe Wright, 2013). Moreover, he focused on developing constructing professional relationships with the employees. In this regard, instead of giving authoritative commands and backlashing at the employees in case of poor performance he used to analyze the overall situation. It increased employee motivation and the positive attitude towards the workplace. Secondly, the yard manager also implemented strategies related to increasing the occupational health and safety of the workplace. He implemented various security systems so that the occupational safety of the truck drivers can be enhanced. The manager also introduced training and development practices for the truck drivers. The truck drivers were trained for technical aspects which contributed in uplifting the overall standard of the safety standards. The truck drivers were also trained in customer services. The implementation of new infrastructure also enhanced the image of the organization. Moreover, the training of the truck drivers in the customer service also increased the positive image of the organization (Jackson, Schuler Jiaang, 2013). It can be deduced that all the strategies implemented by the new yard manager were complementary and; therefore, effective in increasing the overall efficiency of the organization. It assisted the organization in getting rid of negative employees from the organization and increased the overall positivity of the organization. Issues in Sustaining Changes Introducing changes in workplace can be challenging to the organizations. When the changes are introduced, the employees resist them as they are habitual of following the old work practices. Therefore, the business organizations need to plan and implement changes strategically so that the change can result in effective outcomes (Lines, Sullivan, Smithwick Mischung, 2015). In the present situation, the yard manager was responsible in establishing positive change in the organization. He implemented a number of strategies which created positive organization culture in the organization. He was also significant in creating positive relations with the truck drivers. Therefore, if the truck driver will be moved out of the location, it will adversely impact on the change management process. According to the Lewins model of change management, there are three stages in the successful implementation of change. They are unfreeze, change and refreeze. In the unfreeze stage, the organization make s preparation for the change. It includes raising awareness regarding why change in necessary for the organization. In this stage, a motivation is created in the organization to implement the change. The Lewin model of change states that the change is not an event but a process and in this process the organization transits from one state to another. It is the most difficult stage of the change management process as the employees and the management of the organization is fearful and unsure of what the change entails for them. In the last stage, the organization implements strategies to support the change (Cummings, Bridgman Brown, 2016). The support strategies can be in the form of training, coaching and mentoring. The major concern in the change management process is reinforcing the change so that the desired change is maintained and accepted in the future. If the new yard manager is shifted from the organization, the reinforcement of the change will be difficult (Hussain et al, 20 16). From the present case study, it can be analyzed that the yard manager has the knowledge and the experience in successfully handling the change management process. As he has initiated the change management process in the organization, he is also aware of the response of the truck drivers toward different strategies (Stavros, Nikolaos, George, Apostolos, 2016). Moreover, he has also built relationships with the truck drivers and can use these relationships in motivating them in embracing the change. Therefore, if the yard manager will be replaced from the organization, it will create issues in the maintenance of the change. Engagement of Blue Collar Unions in Workplace Changes The change is the people process. The people or the employees of the organization must embrace the change positively and completely for it to be successful. However, different kinds of employees show different responses towards change. The blue collared employees refer to the employees who work manually or on hourly rates. These people may get involve in skilled or unskilled manufacturing, mining, construction and similar physical work. These workers do not have university education and college degrees. Therefore, they are also not aware of the importance of change in the organization. Moreover, the blue collared employees also do not actively participate in the change process. They are unaware that the change is an integral process of organization and is required for the growth of the organization. In contrast to it, the employees in the public or social care organizations are educated and familiar with the change process. These people more readily acknowledge the benefits of change and its importance in the working of the organization. The white collar workers have desk jobs, work in administrative settings and their job roles require them to engage in service oriented work (Lips-Wiersma et al., 2016). These employees are educated and aware that change is an integral part of the organization culture. Therefore, the white collar employees should be more motivated to embrace new changes. Since most of the blue collared employees are less educated, they may form negative perception regarding the change rumors. They are also prone to believe in negative rumors easily. Therefore, it can be concluded that the blue collar workers are more likely to embrace organization change (Stavros et al., 2016). The motivation of the employees to embrace new changes can be tested by their external behavior towards change. The people who are not positive towards change will show negative behavior such as raising awareness regarding the viability and the efficacy of the change process. The positive employees will be enthusiastic towards the change process. The organization can also implement strategies to raise awareness regarding the change or its benefits for the company as well as employees. It will ease the change process and reduce the resistance of the employees towards the change. Conclusion It can be concluded that employee motivation and the employee engagement is essential for the organization. The companies should implement strategies to encourage the employee motivation. It will create a high performing culture in the organization. In the report, the case of a truck company has been examined. Previously, the company was a family-owned company which neglected the welfare of the staff members or the truck drivers. However, new strategies were introduced in the company with the arrival of the new yard manager which uplifted the performance of the organization. The strategies introduced by the organization were complementary and enhanced the performance of the organization. The yard manager implemented a number of strategies such as introducing new uniforms and trucks so that a positive culture is introduced in the organization. It also focused on the implementing occupational safety practices and trained the employees in the technical aspects of driving trucks so that the employees can better practice the safety measures while driving trucks. The company should also implement strategies to sustain changes in the organization. If the yard manager is moved to another location, it will adversely impact on the change process of the organization. It is because he is familiar with the employees and their attitudes. He has also constructed positive working relationships with the employees which can motivate them to embrace the change quickly. Most of the employees have also started realizing the benefits of the current change on the organization. First, slowing population growth. One-child policy has effectively checked the trend of over-rapid population growth. In the 15 years from the founding of the Peoples Republic to 1964, Chinas population increased from 500 million to 700 million, and on average 7. 5 years were needed for the population to increase by 100 million. The 1964-1974 periods were one of high-speed growth where Chinas population increased from 700 million to 900 million in ten years. China has been through the third post-1949 peak period of births from the beginning of the 1990s, the community of women in their prime of fertility (aged 20 to 29) has exceeded 100 million each year on average, and such a huge child-bearing community has a great birth potential still. But, because Chinas current population and family planning programs and policies have won understanding and support from the people, the fertility level of the population has steadily reduced and the trend of over rapid population growth has been effectively checked along with the countrys economic and social development. Compared with 1970, in 1994 the birth rate dropped from 33. 43 per thousand to 17. 7 per thousand; the natural growth rate, from 25. 83 per thousand to 11. 1 per thousand; and the total fertility rate of women, from 5. 81 to around 2. Now, Chinas urban population has basically accomplished the change-over to the population reproduction pattern characterized by low birth rate, low death rate and low growth; and the rural population is currently in this process of change-over. According to statistics supplied by the United Nations, Chinas population growth rate has already been markedly lower than the average level of other developing countries. According to calculation by experts, if China had not implemented family planning but had all along kept the birth rate at the level of the early 1970s, its population would possibly have passed the 1. 5 billion mark by now. Over the past two decades and more, Chinas promotion of family planning has created a population environment conducive to reform and opening to the outside world and socioeconomic development as well as the population conditions for safeguarding the survival and development of China. Second, improving the status of women. One-child policy has further liberated the female productive forces and helped improve the status of women. One-child policy in China has extricated women from frequent births after marriage and the heavy family burden, further liberated and expanded the social productive forces latent in women, and provided them with more opportunities to learn science and general knowledge and take part in economic and social development activities, hence greatly promoted the improvement of the Chinese womens status in economic and social affairs as well as in their families. Third, eradicating of poverty. One-child policy has accelerated the process of eradicating poverty in rural China. The Chinese government has taken an important step in giving support to the development of poor areas to alleviate poverty by promoting one-child policy, holding population growth under control, and raising the life quality of the population in those areas. Target goals were set for each region of the country. Local government officials were responsible for enforcing the population control rules and making sure they did not exceed the the limit they were allotted. SFPC    was established so that different organizations could share information    regarding population control. They are responsible for assimilating information and providing it the Chinese government which in turns helps to form policies. The Discarded Phlogiston Theory in Early Chemistry Mankind may have learned how to make fire many thousands of years ago, but we didnt understand how it worked until much more recently. Many theories were proposed to try to explain why some materials burned, while others didnt, why fire gave off heat and light, and why burned material wasnt the same as the starting substance. Phlogiston theory was an early chemical theory to explain the process of oxidation, which is the reaction that occurs during combustion and rusting. The word phlogiston is an Ancient Greek term for burning up, which in turn derives from the Greek phlox, which means flame. Phlogiston theory was first proposed by the alchemist Johann Joachim (J.J.) Becher in 1667. The theory was stated more formally by Georg Ernst Stahl in 1773. Importance of Phlogiston Theory Although the theory has since been discarded, its important because it shows the transition between alchemists believing in the traditional elements of earth, air, fire, and water, and true chemists, who conducted experimentation that led to the identification of true chemical elements and their reactions. How Phlogiston Was Supposed to Work Basically, the way the theory worked was that all combustible matter contained a substance called phlogiston. When this matter was burned, the phlogiston was released.  Phlogiston had no odor, taste, color or mass. After the phlogiston was freed, the remaining matter was considered to be deflogistated, which made sense to the alchemists, because you couldnt burn them any more. The ash and residue left over from combustion was called the calx of the substance. The calx provided a clue to the error of phlogiston theory, because it weighed less than the original matter. If there was a substance called phlogiston, where had it gone? One explanation was the phlogiston might have negative mass. Louis-Bernard Guyton de Morveau proposed it was simply that phlogiston was lighter than air. Yet, according to Archimedes principle, even being lighter than air couldnt account for the mass change. In the 18th century, chemists did not believe there was an element called phlogiston. Joseph Priestly believed flammability might be related to hydrogen. While phlogiston theory didnt offer all the answers, it remained the principle theory of combustion until the 1780s, when Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier demonstrated mass was not truly lost during combustion. Lavoisier linked oxidation to oxygen, conducting numerous experiments which showed the element was always present. In the face of overwhelming empirical data, phlogiston theory was eventually replaced with true chemistry. By 1800, most scientists accepted oxygens role in combustion. Phlogisticated Air, Oxygen, and Nitrogen Today, we know that oxygen supports oxidation, which is why air helps to feed a fire. If you try to light a fire in a space lacking oxygen, youll have a rough time. The alchemists and early chemists noticed that fire burned in air, yet not in certain other gases. In a sealed contained, eventually a flame would burn out. However, their explanation wasnt quite right. The proposed phlogisticated air was a gas in phlogiston theory that was saturated with phlogiston. Because it was already saturated, phlogisticated air did not allow the release of phlogiston during combustion. The story is told from the point of view of a teenager who is the narrator of the story. The main character in this novel is Holden Caulfield. He is sixteen years old and serves as the narrator of this novel. Holden does not like anybody or anything around him. He is an emotionally troubled kid and has many problems with his life. Phoebe is Holden's little sister. She is ten years old and lives at home with their parents. Phoebe really admires and loves her big brother, Holden. This novel begins when Holden is in a mental hospital in California. The novel is a flashback of the events over a time period of four days. The flashback starts off when Holden gets kicked out of his boarding school, Pency Prep, because he is failing most of his classes. Holden decides to go into New York City for a couple of days until his parents will be expecting him home for Christmas vacation. Holden goes to bars and meets with friends during this time. On the third night, Holden decides to go and visit his sister, Phoebe. Phoebe is one of the only people that Holden actually loves. Holden talks to Phoebe about his life being a failure. He is trying to understand life and his place in the world. Holden decides that he wants to go see Mr. Antolini, an old teacher, to help him get a better understanding of his life. At Mr. Antolini's home, Holden discusses many of the problems that he is facing. Mr. Antolini tells Holden that he has to learn not to hate everyone around him. He has to learn to love people. Women in Islam have little access to education. In many areas girls are often taken out of school when they hit puberty. (â€Å"listserv†). When boys and girls are in third grade they are able to go to the same school but after that, they are unable to do so. (â€Å"listserv†) In some parts if Islam the girls can't be taught by a man after a certain age because it has a negative impact on girls' education. (â€Å"listserv†) While some progress has been made, women are still struggling to be successful. Literacy rates among young Islam women are extreme low. Only 18 percent of women between 15 and 24 can read.The total number of children enrolled in primary schools is increasing rapidly, but the percentage of female students is not Women can do some of the same jobs that men can do. Sometimes women can actually do jobs better than men in particular jobs. In Islam men believe that they should have more right to jobs than women. (â€Å"The True Clash of Civiliansâ € ). Men and women should share equal responsibility. They might not be identical duties, but the totality of rights and responsibilities are balanced. That being said, Islam is a practical religion, and responds to human needs and life situations. Many women need or wish to work for various reasons. For example, some women may want to be mayor in their country or district. Some men in Islam believe that men make better political leaders than women. Like I said before women can do a good of a job as men especially when they have a leadership job. Knowing that women have little access to education, there are some solutions and steps we can take to slowly change the outcome of women.Many societies including some Muslim societies continue to exercise this manner in different forms such as the denial to education. Education is also highly competitive and in our country with culture so important, all children are encouraged to study hard in school and do well at a university level in order to be successful. Muslim girls are encouraged to work towards college education as much as Muslim boys. Some Muslims don't believe in allowing their daughters to go to school. But if Muslim girls just worked hard or even harder then maybe their parents can see that they are trying to better homeless.They don't allow them to learn to read, to participate in debates, to pursue their Master degrees, to succeed in their respective careers, and to make something of their lives. Not being able to do something makes someone want to do it more, so the girls must work extra hard to prove that they can too succeed. Three-quarters of the 1 00 million people are unable to read or write in the Arab countries, which are aged between 15 and 45 years old. But for some women of Islam, that doesn't stop them. Many Muslim women have to cope with the challenges of working in a non-Muslim environment.All women have been exposed to the workplace at some point in their lives can fully grasp the reasons why working outside the home is an enormous problem, particularly for Muslim women.

Evolution is known to be the change of the inherited behaviors to a given crowd of living organisms from one given characteristic to the other (Futuyma, 2005). Scientifically, these changes are believed to be caused by the mixture of three significant progressions; of which includes the variation process, the reproduction together with the selection. The behavioral characteristics of a given item vary according to the given population in a location. Biologically, the process is known to be that of the change in the behavioral characteristic of an individual and it is believed that whenever an organism reproduce its young one, they new organism either posses new characteristic or an altered characteristic of the individual (Maynard, & Szathmary, 1997). Thus, we can say that, evolution may occur whenever the original behavioral characteristic of a given item is traced in the new produced item or organism. Literature Review Evolution occurs when these heritable differences become more common or rare in a population. With this idea, may process in the today world have also been under going evolution so as to obtain the best to serve their people. ILGWU - International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union The International Ladies Garment Workers Union, known as ILGWU or ILG, was founded in 1900. Most of the members of this textile workers union were women, often immigrants. It began with a few thousand members and had 450,000 members in 1969. Controversies Over Communist Influence Left-wing socialists and members of the Communist Party rose to considerable influence and power, until, in 1923, a new president, Morris Sigman, began to purge communists from union leadership positions. This led to an internal conflict, including a 1925 work stoppage. While the union leadership battled internally, the manufacturers hired gangsters to break a long 1926 general strike on the part of a New York local led by Communist Party members. When Hillman refused to support purging communists from the Labor Party, Dubinsky, but not Hillman, left to start the Liberal Party in New York. Through Dubinsky and until he retired in 1966, the ILGWU was supportive of the Liberal Party. Declining Membership, Merger In the 1970s, concerned with declining union membership and the movement of many textile jobs overseas, the ILGWU spearheaded a campaign to Look for the Union Label. In 1995, ILGWU merged with the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union (ACTWU) into the Union of Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Employees (UNITE). He has taken a comprehensive study of elementary children in five cities in south Korea by taking a cross-section examination on   the urine phthalate concentrations on both the children and their mothers.   The findings show that they measured  Ã‚   â€Å"mono-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (MEHP) and mono (2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate (MEOHP)† which are metabolies of â€Å" di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP), and mono-nbutyl phthalate (MBP), a metabolite of dibutyl phthalate (DBP)† in the urine .   â€Å"The geometricmean (ln) concentrations of MEHP, MEOHP, and MBP were 21.3 ÃŽ ¼g/L [geometric SD (GSD) = 2.2 ÃŽ ¼g/L; range, 0.5-445.4], 18.0 ÃŽ ¼g/L (GSD = 2.4; range, 0.07-291.1), and 48.9 ÃŽ ¼g/L (GSD = 2.2; range, 2.1- 1645.5), respectively†. The chronological results show that the full scale IQ and verbal IQ were nagatively associated with DEHP but not   WITH DBP metabolities. The results of this finding   are very comprehensive as thay also show that there is a negative relationship between trhe children vocabulary use and the concentration of the urine. After an extensive marternal IQ controll the findings shw that a large inverse relationship between DEHP metabolities and the use of vocabulary also remained. There is a difference between boys and girls as boys show a negative association between increasing MEHP phthalate concentrations and the total sum of DEHP metabolite concentrations while girls   shown   had little or no association between these variables. Howevr the auther does not show clear evidence on the same and critical study in the field is highly required. In the methods of study the auther extensively talks of  Ã‚   a study conducted between april and october 2008 which was named â€Å" Effects of Pollution on Neurobehavioral Development and future Policies to Protect our children†. The study assessed different elements such as Lead, Mercury and manganese in the dlood as welll as neurocognitive functioning of children including attention and concentration together with   their general intelligence. So as to asses the childrens marternal IQ, their child developmental state, their mothers were also interviewed. Urine was collected using paper cups from   all the children who were subject to the study between nine and eleven in the morning. After collection, th urine was placed in containers   â€Å"(high-clarity polypropylene Falcon tubes)† and stored at –20 °C   untill the analyzation of the . Field blanks consisted of purified water. The are then brought to room temperature and vortexed after thawing.  Ã‚   Acritical and extensive of the methods used has been well shown in the study following all steps and explanation of the procedures. At all   this study has a critical and technical approach as it takes the   reader through all the steps used in the study. While doing the statistcal analysis the study, used t-tests of the students or â€Å"(ANOVAs)† for testing continues variables and the chisquare test for categorical mvariables. A comprehensive use of   linear regression analysis was used in the study to analyse the association between â€Å"urine phthalate (MEOHP,MEHP, and MBP) concentration and WISC IQ scores†. Since the distribution of the metabolite was skewed in the sample, log-transformed values were highly used. From the variables on the analysis carried out regression models have been built. Taking th IQ score as the primary dependent variable and the urine phthalate concentrations as the primary independent variables.   A set of covariates based on the predicators childrens cognitive functioning helped to perform the regression analysis.   After this study models have been improved on the developmental socioeconomic and IQ variables. The study however does not give us clear evidence on the martenal IQ as it present models with and without   the Martenal IQ. In the study all analysis were considered important. The study in their results analyzing the relationship between environmental exposure to phthalates and children’s IQ scores show that there is a negative association between IQ and urine phthalates in humans. The study is of great significance comparing it with other studies that have been done since its the first to show the above results. It is there true to say that a child’s IQ may be affected by genetic, educational, familial and social factors.however these results may contrast with any   observed association between the line of study and the income. To help readers nunderstand this , this study tried to determine whether â€Å"phthalates were inversely associated with children’scognition independent of potential confounders†. Before the study could adjust for martenal IQ, it found inverse relationships between â€Å"MEHP, MEOHP, and the sum of secondarymetabolites for DEHP and the children’sFSIQ, VIQ, and vocabulary and block design Scores † also vocabulary score was negatively associated with MBP. This study found that maternal IQ is one of the cofounders of children’s IQ. The study also found that adjusting for a confounder that has a stronger effect than the valuable of interest can most of the time lead to underratings in the true effect of this variable. Control for maternal IQ according to the study had a great impact on the effect size of the alliance between phthalates and IQ. It may act as a confounder especially if the maternal IQ and the level of phthalates in children   have a link to each other. It is noted that MIQ might have had an influence on the childrens environmental exposure to the substances which were to be seen on th level of phthalate metabolites.  Ã‚   All in all MIQ have effects on the children IQ, therefore affecting affecting the association between child IQ and phthalate level however the study revealed that after MIQ, MEHP, MEOHP, and the sum of secondary metabolites of DEHP had been adjusted there were inverse relationships with children’s vocabulary scores. We cannot at whtsoever means say that this study provided enough evidence of a definative association between phthalates with children’s IQ indipendent of MIQ because there could be a residual confounding of matarnal IQ. The study shows that children are of special concern regarding phthalate exposure due to their neurodevelopmental state. Also if they are subjected to neurotoxic agents, there is likelyhood that they will suffer due to critical periods of vulnerability for their developing nerves. Even after birth, Neurotoxic agents could disrupt the temporal and regional emergence of critical Developmental processes. Even if this study has most of advantages, it has some disadvantages. Atleast 16 phthalene metabolites in urine can be measured but in this study only three were measured which were limited to the specifications of the study. They measured three based on availability of standard , childrens likely exposure, and technical experience of the analysis. They only used one measurement, which may not have same results as when they would have in examining the level and severity of chronic exposure. Judging from a single spot-urine measurement could have given wrong answers, as it may not reflect long term-exposure since Phthalates are rapidly metabolized and excreted. However, on phthalate measurements over time according to other different studies, there is moderate consistency. The study assumes that when multiple experiments are consistent, then a single measurement reflects a typical measurement. Another limitation is that the study did not show results of maternal levels of exposure. Also the maternal IQ had a large effect size on the associations making it not possible to tell whether the quality of the home environment and stimulation provided in the home could be   potential confounders. There are a number of fast food brands in Colombo and therefore, some of them could not be studied Chapter 1 summary This is initially more focused on the introduction and background of the research by giving a brief introduction to the research. At the middle and latter parts of the chapter, it will elaborate the research objectives while taking about the nature of the fast food sector and research limitations. It has also discussed the significance and the gravity of the research and the research problem. Chapter 2 Literature review The term fast food relates to food that can be prepared quickly. Most of this popular type of food availed in packaged form called takeaways. The fast food industry has its roots in the for sale stands, that were part and parcel of ancient and East Asian societies. (Gaynor Borade, 2012) The concept of fast food is generally associated with urban development. Fast food outlets today are elaborate quick service outlets. The franchise operations have generated restaurant chains that offer standardized meals across the globe. On account of a low capital requirement and popularity of fast food, fast food restaurants and drive through outlets are common throughout the world. Also known as sit-ins.These restaurants cater to the dry food demands of the younger generation, extremely tight adult work schedule. (Gaynor Borade, 2012) Today, some fast food outlets sell dangerous food which contains chemicals that are injurious to health. Favorite chemicals used as part of the food making process are -titanium dioxide(found in dressings), azodicarbonamide (found in some subway breads),sodium phosphate(found in coffee in fast food joints)à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦(Uttara Manohar,2012). Health problems that are brought on because of regular junk food eating-asthma, strokes, type 2 diabetes, cancer, liver disease, and cardiovascular diseases. (Uttara Manohar, 2012) I found that some ladies and gentlemen have taken step forward written articles about the bad effects of fast food to convince people who are in the dark. They propose healthy food and beverages. Does any of this sound appetizing? I think not. To indulge once in a while is all right; after all you are human enough to have cravings. What you shouldnt do is indulge to a point where it qualifies as gluttony. Treat yourself to healthy homemade foods using fresh produce instead, coupling low-sodium ingredients and all-natural add-ons. Eat your favorite junk food meal twice a month, and not more. Spread the good word. (Uttara Manohar, 2012) Eating Junk food now lead to obesity among most of youngsters and adults. (Uttara Manohar, 2012) So, needs quality and healthy food beverages As a result of a recent health revolution, fast food chains and restaurants have started the integration of all possible food nutrition in their menu. Hamburgers and French fries are probably the most famous fast foods, are nowadays made with the help of healthy low cholesterol fats, lesser oil, and whole wheat breads. Many hamburgers nowadays, have a high content of salads and vegetables in them and are made with sauces and prickles that are rich in vitamins. The fries are nowadays not deep-fried and have a low content of oil in themà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ (Scholasticus K, 2010). Not only healthy food, Cleanliness hygiene issues are relevant to the premises, equipment and staff. Tidy premises, smart uniforms and the use of protective gloves, for instance, can all have a positive effect on the perception of the food service operation as being clean and hygienic. (Cousins et al.2002) A fast food outlet which sells healthy products is identified social responsibility and it can make profits as there are well educated and sensible people who support by writing and becoming customers of the fast food outlet which sells quality and healthy food and beverages. Strategies Normally, if any business needs to survive, it must develop strategies as the environment is always changing. There are marketing strategies, pricing strategies, etc. There are various pricing methods such as; cost-plus, prime costing methods, backward pricing, rate of return pricing, profit per customer pricing, elasticity pricing and completion pricing(Cousins et al.2002).Marketing strategies, such as; market segmentation, porter generic strategies. There are numerous Pricing strategies such as; Loss leader, demand-based pricing, etc. One of the major marketing strategies is market segmentation. Researching the market will facilitate the identification of consumers needs, wants, demands, goals and values as they relate to food and beverage products (Cousins et al.2002).there are many different ways to segment a market such as; geographic, demographic, psychographic and behavioral segmentations. After well identifying all the market segments that we can approach with good products, we can be sure that our business will be successful as we can satisfy the customers needs with the right product and also we can then get customer loyalty which ensures continuation of the business. Price is the element of the meal experience that also relates to value (Cousins et al.2002). So, we need to ensure that there is strategic pricing where a high-priced product might not be perceived as a low quality product and also, a low priced product might not be perceived as a low quality product. Pricing strategies are so important to get customer loyalty. Social responsibility Recognizing social responsibility and being responsible for the welfare of the society can be ultimately a good strategy as there will be support from the society to keep the organization which has set a code of business and social ethics. Social responsibility objectives stress the ethical aspects of a food service organizations objectives. These include 1. Safety of products 2.working conditions 3.honesty for example, not offering or accepting bribes or other inducements, 4.equal opportunities and 5. Pollution and other environmental concerns (Cousins et al.2002). So, when we are running the business ethically and abiding by law, the ethical society will give their vote for continuation of the business. Therefore, a fast food outlet must have appropriate recruitment and selection strategies, the right HR policy, and should keep the existing staff motivated to get the maximum productivity of them and prevent labor turnover. When it comes to motivation of employees, we need to well understand and practice the current contemporary views and theories on motivation such as Elton Mayos the human relation movement,Rensis Likerts the four systems of management, Douglas McGregors theory X and Y, Fredrick Hertzbergs hygiene theory, Abraham Maslows hierarchy of human needs, Edgar Scheins the psychological contract and career anchor, Amitai Etzionis the managers power and workers power, Carrot and stick method, etc (CTH,2011). out of them, Maslows hierarchy of human needs and Hertzbergs two factor theories are well respected. Maslow proposed a hierarchy of universal human needs representing the order in which these needs become motivators of human behavior. Human beings needs and desires are inexhaustible. As soon as one need is satisfied another appears to take its place. This is one of the most influential theories on motivation as it describes human needs and desires divided into sets or levels. The sets are physiological needs, safety needs, social needs, ego needs and self actualization. Hertzberg found that factors associated with the job environment such as; compensation, supervision, working conditions, company policy, so on, create dissatisfaction and unhappiness on the job when they are inadequate; they become dissatisfied. But removing the causes of dissatisfaction doesnt create satisfaction and it therefore doesnt motivate performance. Hertzberg called these factors hygiene factors (maintenance factors). Hertzberg found that the factors that motivate consists of opportunities in the job itself for achievement and growth such factors as recognition, achievement, advancement, responsibility, the work itself. He called these factors motivators. To start up a new fast food outlet other than buildings and equipment we need to understand corporate social responsibility that is ensuring that the fast food outlet sell quality and healthy products, the environment is not being polluted, etc , must have good strategies to win the competition and make more profits, and a great staff who can be productive. Chapter 2 summary This chapter is about literature reviews, various strategies, arguments and thoughts. At the beginning, it discusses origin of fast food outlet and at the middle; it discusses healthy and non healthy fast food beverages and its effects with reviews. At the end, the current marketing strategies which are essential to survive are discussed and one of the crucial parts that need to be addressed to succeed a business is employee satisfaction and retention is discussed. Chapter 3 Research methodology This chapter will discuss and emphasize on the methodology of this research study. Initially, formation and conceptual framework is illustrated and thereafter, it will discuss selection methods of data, reviving, identifying of variables. Afterward, study development is shown. After this, the realization and practice of this study comes under the sections of sample selection, data collection method, and data analysis and summarizing. As a result, the new fast food outlet will not be able to attract a plenty of customers. Data collection methods and instruments A questionnaire is used to find hot selling fast food and beverages among different age groups and General opinion of the public towards the fast food outlets Two or three successful fast food outlets managers including international fast food brand outlets and its employees (especially waitresses and waiters) and two or three fast food outlets managers and its employees in fast food outlets which compete to get an adequate amount of consumers would be interviewed to find answers for their cost of running the business, their classes of fittings and furniture, how they retain their employees, their hot selling products and how they interact with the public. Interviews are with vendors who sell quality ingredients for making healthy food and beverages. A few fast food outlets in particular areas which attract more people than others and what people most consume at each fast food outlet and what the busiest day of each week is for each fast food outlet will be observed. Data analysis As this is a qualitative research, this research would use deductive reasoning method. Chapter 3 summary This chapter discusses methodology of the research study. The structure, variables or the framework is considered. Thereafter, methodology, sample and data collection methods are declared. Chapter 4 Data presentation, Analysis and discussion This chapter is about data presentation, analysis and discussion. Most of the weighting is given to primary data since there was not a plenty of secondary data. It focuses on findings, discussion and analysis which cover hypothesis testing. Findings Data collected from the questionnaire 40 people were given the questionnaire. Majority of them consume fast foods at evenings. All of the people like healthy fast food and beverages. Information gathered from the interviews Cost -Average cost of the interviewed fast food outlets per month is more than Rs.300, 000 this figure includes production cost and general administration cost. -Initial cost to start a fast food outlet varies according to factors like, level of service, ambience, food and beverages, number of employees, etc. Risks -Food and beverages need to be processed in a quality setting otherwise they would be polluted. -Food and beverage production should be limited prior to the past experiences of selling. -employees would leave the organization if they are not well treated, etc. Employee retention -to retain employees there should be the right HR policy, effective employment of recruitment and selection strategies, reward systems, etc. Hot selling food and beverages -Pizza, burger, fried chicken, fried potatoes are amongst the hot selling fast foods and soft drinks like Coca Cola, fruit juices, ice creams are the hot selling beverages. Competitors offers and promotions -The competitors commonly use price reduction, buy one and get one for free promotion, free home delivery, etc. Raw material market place -prices of fruit and vegetables have been increased recently and every market place tend to sell their products at higher prices. However, directly buying from the farmers is the cheapest way but this involves additional costs such as transportation, labor costs, etc. Information gathered from the observations -The busiest times for Mc Donalds were during 3.00- 6.00 pm -The busiest times for KFC were during 4.00- 7.00 pm -The busiest times for Mr. Burger King were during 4.00-7.00 pm -The above fast food outlets have been serving for a plenty of customers at the above mentioned time ranges. -Most of the customers tended to consume fried chicken, fried potatoes, pizza and burgers. So, they were the hot selling fast foods at that time. -the hot selling beverages were fruit juices and cool coffee Analysis and discussion Analysis 1 Hypothesis 1: Micro culture-high initial cost, difficulty of finding employees and retaining them, poor location and lack of customer attractions, competitors hot selling food and beverages will be the barriers to start up a new fast food outlet. -High initial cost, difficulty of finding employees and retaining them, poor location and lack of customer attractions are the barriers to start up new fast food outlets. -Starting up of a new fast food in Colombo does not involve high initial cost, difficulty of finding of skillful employees and difficulty of retaining them, difficulty of finding a place full of customer attractions and difficulty of making competitive fast food and beverages. -Therefore, it is possible to start up this fast food outlet in Colombo. Discussion 1 High initial cost can be ignored due to that my budget is above the found average cost to run a fast food outlet in Colombo per month. Finding of skillful persons can be done using local sources such as recruitment agencies, newspaper advertisements, own website advertisements, etc. Retaining of them can be done as this research identified strategies such as motivation strategies, pricing strategies, etc. There were a number of places in Colombo which are full of customer attractions and a building can be taken on rent in such place in Colombo. Healthy fast food and beverages are going to be made with the peoples votes and so, these definitely have a market. Analysis 2 Hypothesis 2: Macro culture- increase of low quality fast food outlets in Colombo and they are creating a bad picture amongst the existing fast food customers towards fast food outlets will result in difficulty of attracting customers and maintaining goodwill. increase of low quality fast food outlets and they are creating a bad picture amongst the existing fast food customers towards fast food outlets result in difficulty of attracting customers and maintaining goodwill starting up of a new fast food outlet is not affected from increasing low quality fast food outlets in Colombo. -therefore, it is possible to start up this fast food outlet. Discussion 2 Most of the interviewed and the questionnaires peoples attitude towards fast food is positive as they say that they do not consume fast food on behalf of every meal. They voted for healthy fast food and beverages this means a fast food outlet that sell healthy fast food and beverages can be started. This fast food has no bad effect from the people as they like fast food outlets which sell quality and healthy food and beverages. Analysis 3 Hypothesis 3: External macro cultural issues- international fast food brand outlets will do more promotional activities to attract more and more customers. As a result, the new fast food outlet will not be able to attract a plenty of customers. -International fast food brand outlets do more and more promotional activities. -for starting a new fast food outlet, appropriate and competitive promotional activities were identified. -therefore, it is possible to attract a plenty of customers Chapter 4 summary Presentation, analysis and discussion of research findings were elaborated and at the same time, it compares developed hypotheses in relation with findings. Chapter 5 Conclusions and recommendations This researchs aim is to find possibility of starting up a new fast food outlet in Colombo. Therefore, this research looked into the internal and external barriers and found out ways and means of overcoming those identified and potential barriers for succeeding. When the following are satisfied it is possible to start up a new fast food outlet in Colombo. Starting up of a new fast food outlet in Colombo does not involve high initial cost, difficulty of finding of skillful employees and difficulty of retaining them, difficulty of finding a place full of customer attractions and difficulty of making competitive fast food and beverages Starting up of a new fast food outlet is not affected from increasing low quality fast food outlets in Colombo For starting a new fast food outlet, appropriate and competitive promotional activities were identified According to the research, therefore, it is possible to start up a new fast outlet in manta place, Colombo 2 which sells quality and healthy fast food and beverages.
